Taiwan struck 5.8 magnitude earthquake, no immediate reports of damage | World News

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan’s rural northeastern county of Yilan on Wednesday, the island’s meteorological department said. There were no immediate reports of damage, Reuters reported.
As per initial reports, the earthquake shook the buildings in the capital city of Taipei. The earthquake struck at a depth of 72.4 km (45 miles), the weather adminration said.
According to Taiwan’s fire department, no damage was reported in the 5.8 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday, including the island’s science parks where Taiwan’s semiconductor manufacturing takes place.

However, the US Geological Survey said the earthquake’s magnitude was 5.0 and it was about 21 kilometers (12 miles) south-southeast of Yilan on the northeast coast. It was centered 69 kilometers (43 miles) below the Earth’s surface, Associated Press reported.
Taiwan, which is prone to earthquakes, lies near the junction of two tectonic plates. The island was struck a major earthquake in April 2024, a 7.2 magnitude quake that hit the east coast county of Hualien and killed at least 13 people.
In a major earthquake in southern Taiwan in 2016, about 100 people were killed, while a 7.3 magnitude earthquake in 1999 had killed around 2,000 people.
