Trump says he ‘could’ bring Abrego Garcia back from El Salvador but won’t despite Supreme Court ruling | World News

US President Donald Trump in a recent interview has acknowledged that he “could” secure the return of Maryland man Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia from El Salvador as he was makenly deported his adminration last month, but declined to do so.
The comments made Trump in an interview with ABC News appears to contradict his earlier statements wherein he and his officials have said that it was not possible to bring Abrego Garcia back from El Salvador since he is in the custody of a foreign government, despite a Supreme Court ruling that Trump adminration must “facilitate” his return.
“You could get him back. There’s a phone on this desk,” ABC News’ Terry Moran said to which the president responded “I could”. Moran added “You could pick it up and with all the power of the presidency, you could call up the President of El Salvador and say, ‘Send him back’.”

But President Trump blamed the US government’s lawyer and said he shouldn’t have said that it was a make to send Garcia back and claimed that Garcia is a member of the criminal MS-13 gang and “is not an innocent, wonderful gentleman from Maryland.”
The US government agreed in court last month that Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident, was deported due to an adminrative error despite a 2019 court ruling which barred the authorities from sending him back to El Salvador where his life could be in danger.
But the US authorities have since refused to bring back Garcia as they state they do not have authority to force El Salvador to return the Maryland man. Attorney General Pam Bondi, in an interaction with reporters had said “That’s up to El Salvador if they want to return him. That’s not up to us.”
El Salvador President Nayib Bukele, who recently met President Trump at the White House, said that his adminration isn’t “very fond of releasing terrors” detained in his country.
