Trump adminration threatens Harvard University may lose ability to enroll international students | World News

Continuing its crackdown on educational institutes, the US President Donald Trump’s adminration has now said that Harvard University may lose its ability to enroll international students if it does not meet the demands of the US government to share visa information on international students’ “illegal and violent activities”.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kri Noem, in an announcement on Wednesday, discontinued two DHS grants worth more than $2.7 million to Harvard University.
The Homeland Security, in a press release stated, “Secretary Noem wrote a scathing letter demanding detailed records on Harvard’s foreign student visa holders’ illegal and violent activities April 30, 2025, or face immediate loss of Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certification,” CNN reported.

A Harvard University spokesperson acknowledged the letter sent Noem which was regarding grant cancellations and scrutiny of foreign student visas.
However, the university’s spokesperson added that the varsity stood its last week stance to “not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights” but would follow the law accordingly.

President Trump has threatened the educational institutes in US of federal funding cuts over pro-Palestinian campus protests against Israel, after the latter went on a rampage to devastate Gaza since Hamas militants attacked Tel Aviv in October 2023.

Homeland Secretary Noem said “With a $53.2 billion endowment, Harvard can fund its own chaos – DHS won’t,” and accused Harvard University of running “anti-American, pro-Hamas ideology”.
Earlier, the US Department of Education had announced that it had frozen about $2.3 billion in federal funds in grants and contracts to Harvard University after it refused to follow the White House demands.Story continues below this ad
Harvard University President Alan Garber, in a letter to Harvard Community on Friday had said the sweeping demands violated the university’s First Amendment rights and “exceeds the statutory limits of the government’s authority under Title VI.”
