Trump announces 100% tariff for movies produced outside US, calls Hollywood crisis a ‘National Security Threat’ | World News
US President Donald Trump on Sunday announced a 100% tariff on all movies “produced in foreign land”, stating that the movie industry in America is “dying a very fast death”.
Informing about his decision, the US president in a post on Truth Social claimed that he has authorized the Department of Commerce and United States Trade Representative to immediately implement the 100% tariff on movies produced outside of the United States, although Trump didn’t provide any details on how the tariff would be instituted.
“Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood, and many other areas within the USA, are being devastated,” Trump said, alleging that it is a concerted effort other nations and hence a “National Security Threat”.

Hollywood is already facing the heat of a trade war between Washington and Beijing as China last month announced it would reduce the quota of American movies allowed into that country.
The China Film Adminration, in a statement on April 10 said “The wrong action of the US government to abuse tariffs on China will inevitably further reduce the domestic audience’s favourability towards American films,” The Guardian reported.
After the United States, China is the second largest market for movies, though in recent times, domestic Chinese movies have outshone Hollywood imports. A tariff war in the film market would affect significant western studios, majorly Walt Disney Company, Paramount Global, and Warner Bros Discovery.
Trump had introduced reciprocal tariffs on all its global trading partners last month, ranging from 10% to 50% only to put it under moratorium for 90 days. Though a 125% tariff for Chinese products continues.
