The US, Iran and a group of regional mediators are discussing the terms for a potential 45-day ceasefire that could lead ‌to a permanent end to the war, Axios reported on Sunday, citing ‌four US, Israeli ‌and regional sources with ‌knowledge of the talks. Reuters could not immediately verify the report.

The US outlet cited four US, Israeli and regional sources with knowledge of the talks. They told Axios that the “negotiations are taking place through Pakani, Egyptian and Turkish mediators and also through text messages sent between Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and Iran’s Foreign Miner Abbas Araghchi”.

The sources described the chances for reaching a partial deal over the next 48 hours as “slim”.

According to Axios, Iranian officials have made clear to the mediators that they do not want to be caught in a situation similar to Gaza or Lebanon, where there is a truce on paper but where the US and Israel can attack again whenever they want to.
