Prevent complications with early detection, treatment

One cannot prevent a disease but medical complications in a body can be prevented by early diagnosis and treatment, Dr Subash Mishra, Director (Epidemic), said here on Wednesday. Diseases push down human immunity, inviting other diseases. This is also true for Mucormycosis (Black Fungus), he told the media.

With Chhattisgarh recording 90 cases, Dr Mishra said patients with uncontrolled diabetes who used steroids or took experimental injections during Covid-19 treatment are reporting the most cases of Mucormycosis. The use of steroids lowers the immunity of patients, he said.

At present, 90 Mucomycosis patients are undergoing treatment at AIIMS Raipur, Dr B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Medical College and three private hospitals in Raipur. Of four patients detected in Mahasamund, two have recovered and two are under treatment, he said. He urged those who recovered from Covid but were administered steroid or experimental injections to take extra care.

The patients should also desist from gardening, Dr Mishra added.
