Apex Court Directs CG Government to Compensate Rape Accused

New Delhi: In a bizarre incident on Friday, the Supreme Court of India ordered Chhattisgarh Government to compensate a rape accused paying him an amount of Rs. 7.5 Lakhs. The incident relates to the Raipur drict where a rape accused was wrongfully kept behind the bars for 3 additional years. He was sentenced to a 7 year jail term but even after the High Court directions the accused was not released and instead served 10 years in jail.

The Apex Court in its statement said that this act is the violation of giving constitutional rights to a citizen of the country. Former Jail Superintendent, Rajendra Gaykwad, said in his statement that the accused was given a 12 year jail term initially to which he appealed to the High Court. The High Court, on July 19th, 2018 reduced his jail term to 7 years. Rajendra contested that he was not given required order documents on time as a reason of which such make has happened.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court in its order has directed concerned officials to take appropriate action against the authority in default. The matter relates to Ambikapur Central Jail, where a new jail superintendent took over the office from Rajendra Gaykwad.
