More women battalions are needed in Manipur to tackle the threat posed by ‘Meera Paibis’, a women’s group that claims to protect women, as it is not only obstructing the movement of central paramilitary forces in conflict-hit areas, but also helping them commit serious crimes, security officials say.
The Assam Rifles has very few women personnel and officials feel they are not trained to deal with law and order problems. Officials tasked with maintaining law and order in Manipur have been pressing for deployment of women personnel of paramilitary forces in the state. Specifically, they are requesting deployment of women Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel equipped with anti-riot equipment. Now the army has asked for a women’s force to fight Meera Pabis.

‘ *Threatens to be naked’*

An army officer said that you will often see these women who call themselves Meera Pabis, they threaten to strip themselves if pressured. When army troops move to another destination in the mountainous regions, these women lead the way with sticks

In difficult times that directly affect the community, every woman in Manipur becomes a Meera Paibis. Before and after India’s independence, various women’s organizations played an important role in eliminating injustice from the society, and Meera Paibis is also one of those groups. It belongs to the most populous community residing in Manipur.

Meera Paibis, also known as Imas or Mothers of Manipur, are Meitei women who come from all strata of society in the Imphal Valley. These women represent powerful moral force. Mira pybis are loosely organized, usually led by groups of senior women.
