Sonam Kapoor reveals what her wedding will be like

Sonam Kapoor has always been a believer of old-school romance, and it looks like all her dreams of a “happily ever after” are going to come true very soon. The grapevine has been abuzz with speculation that Sonam is all set to tie the knot with her longtime boyfriend, Anand Ahuja, next week.

The Kapoor residence is already lit up and decorated, giving further momentum to the wedding rumours. Apparently, rehearsals for the sangeet are on in full swing, and Sonam’s cousin Janhvi will perform to a medley of her mother, the late Sridevi’s songs. Other preparations for the Sonam Kapoor-Anand Ahuja wedding are also said to be underway.

According to reports, the sangeet will take place at a five-star hotel in Mumbai. The mehendi ceremony is to take place at the banquet hall of the building in Bandra-Kurla Complex in which Sonam owns a sprawling 7,000-square-feet apartment. The wedding itself will take place at the heritage mansion of Sonam’s aunt Kavita Singh, in Bandra.

While Bollywood gears up for the first big, fat wedding of the year, we take you back to the time when Sonam shared her wedding plans with us. The Neerja actress was on the cover of the February issue of Brides Today, and she opened up to editor Nupur Mehta Puri about what she wanted her own wedding to be like.

Sonam is not a fan of lavish weddings, and would like to opt for a close-knit celebration instead. “I think I’ll have a wedding with only my family and close friends in attendance. I would also prefer to get married in India, because it’s my favourite place in the world,” she said.

“If and when I get married, I would obviously like my sister (Rhea Kapoor) to be my chief bridesmaid. I don’t know if that works or not. Do Indians have bridesmaids? My best friends Samyukta (Nair), Shehla (Khan), Swara (Bhasker), and Jackie (Jacqueline Fernandez) would also be there,” the actress said, when asked about who she would pick as her bridesmaids.

Designer Anamika Khanna shares a great relationship with Sonam for the last decade and a half, and the actress expressed a desire to be dressed in Anamika’s creations on her big day. “Everybody dreams of being an Anamika bride. I just have an added advantage,” she laughed.

Sonam may be quite the fashionista, but when it comes to her bridal trousseau, she would like to keep it traditional. “I don’t like fashion pieces. I like beautiful, traditional Indian clothes, that don’t go out of style,” she told Brides Today, adding that a traditional silk saree is a must-have for every bride.

“Don’t do the mathapatti, the nose ring, the necklace, and the hathphool all together. Every piece should not be a statement piece. There should be one thing that’s beautiful and stunning, and everything else has to accentuate it,” she said. Brides-to-be should not be uncomfortable in their wedding trousseau, Sonam advised, adding that they “should be happy, because that makes them look beautiful, no matter what outfit they put on”.

Talking about how she would like her groom to be dressed, Sonam said, “I personally like a little bit of matchy-matchy things, but there just has to be an element of that. It can’t be the same fabric, with the same embroidery on the outfit that the bride is also wearing. I just find it a bit too much. I like it when there is a synergy to it. It could be a little pocket square, or a little passa.”
