Priyanka Gandhi receives report on Congress’ Lok Sabha drubbing in Uttar Pradesh
New Delhi: Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday assembled a task force to assess the factors that led to the party’s drubbing in Uttar Pradesh in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Reportedly, organisational weakness and complacency were found to be the prime reasons behind Congress’ humiliating defeat in the state.
Priyanka Gandhi directed three recently-appointed All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretaries to figure out the reasons behind the party’s rout in the state especially in Amethi, a traditional Congress seat which party president Rahul Gandhi failed to retain for the fourth consecutive time.
The three secretaries travelled across the state and compiled a ground report. They presented the report to Priyanka Gandhi during a meeting at her residence. The report mentioned organisational weakness to be the main reason behind Congress’ drubbing in Uttar Pradesh.
The report also mentioned that complacency within the party ranks and late entry of the party in the electoral fray were driving factors in Congress’ failure to stop the Modi wave in Uttar Pradesh.
Ever since the abysmal outcome of the Congress in the recently-held elections, Priyanka Gandhi has been routinely taking stock of the situation in Uttar Pradesh. She stayed busy during the electioneering phase with rallies and meetings, and after the defeat, she has been actively looking for the loopholes.
The only big consolation for the grand old party came from Rae Bareli where former party president Sonia Gandhi secured a comfortable victory. The vote share of Congress fell to a measly 6.3 per cent in the 2019 elections, signalling danger signs for the party.
