RAIPUR: In a major breakthrough, Gudhiyari police busted an inter-state racket of fraudsters who were duping people on the pretext of giving insurance policy awards through fake call centres.
The two cheats were arrested in New Delhi and brought to Raipur on transit remand on Wednesday.
According to police sources, they received a complaint from Murlidhar Shrivas about a fraud worth Rs 4.5 lakh in October last year. On the basis of his complaint, cops learnt that a gang of fraudsters was duping people of crores of rupees through fake call centres.
Explaining the modus operandi, police said that cheats informed Murlidhar that he had won a cash award of Rs 24 lakh from his insurance policies. He was then asked to deposit a cheque clearance amount of Rs 1.64 lakh in a designated bank account.
After Murlidhar deposited the money, he received another call. The tricksters demanded additional money, while saying that his policy was forwarded to the income tax department for clearance. The complainant then deposited around Rs 4.50 lakh.
After a few days, Murlidhar realized that he was taken for a ride and lodged a complaint with Gudhiyari police under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code.
To trace the culprits, cops gathered information about the fraudsters by the extensive use of technology.Following tip-offs and after tracking similar cases in another place, police arrested the two culprits, identified as Akil Ahmed of Budaun and Rahul Pratap Singh of Mathura, from Delhi.
A special team, led by chief superintendent of police Anant Sahu and inspector Hem Prakash Nayak busted the gang. In the course of initial interrogations, the culprits confessed to their crime.
